Count is an ergonomic crochet hook handle with a built-in stitch counter aiming to make crocheting easier, more efficient, and more accessible.

How might we help crocheters keep track of their stitches more easily, so they can multitask without constant counting or the frustration of undoing mistakes?

Background

Background

Design a product and manufacture 10 of them to sell at the end-of-semester marketplace. As with any mass manufactured product, keep in mind the cost of goods, labor, and the perceived value and desirability of the product.

Background

Crocheters have to count each stitch they make while crocheting. Especially when starting out, this may be a difficult task when they try to crochet passively and it is very inconvenient to undo their work after realizing an added or missed stitch in a previous row.

opportunity

The original Count concept was meant to include a clock, which was later removed during concept refinement for simplicity and ease of manufacturing.

Form Development

The placement of the button was moved to be pressed by the pinky finger. This way it was still easy to press the button, while limiting accidental presses.

The handle in the initial prototype was too thick, leading to the design being slimmed down for ergonomic comfort and ease of use.

The final design has removable caps corresponding to each hook
size and a stabilizing tube to cradle the bottom of the hook, ensuring
stability while enabling effortless hook changes for the user.

The handle, comprising two 3D-printed PLA parts, is joined using
super glue. The independently printed caps are specifically
designed to be compatible with Susan Bates 3.5-6.5mm aluminum
crochet hooks.

To complement the handle and hooks, a written pattern was
created for buyers, guiding them in crafting their personalized
carrying pouches.

The packaging for Count are white boxes with transparent tops.
These boxes were filled with purple confetti and included the
Count handle, an assortment of aluminum hooks compatible with
Count, a yarn needle, and a written pattern for a carrying pouch,
and linked video tutorials for complete crochet beginners. The final
touch involved wrapping the box with a crochet string made of
purple yarn, tied into a bow.

The marketplace setup involved allowing buyers to build their own box and learn about the product and accompanying hooks, needles, and a beginner crochet pattern. The box was then personally assembled for each customer and tied with a yarn bow to provide a personable and informative experience.
